It also depends on the people, manufacturing expertise, and reliable supply needed to bring that innovation closer to patients.  SpyGlass Pharma has announced the acquisition of Advanced Vision Science (AVS) for approximately $13 million in cash. Announced on 1 October 2026, the deal brings its existing intraocular lens supplier in-house.  #### Strengthening intraocular lens manufacturing. Previously a wholly owned Santen subsidiary, California-based AVS develops and manufactures intraocular lenses (IOLs) and lens materials. Santen describes the transfer as part of its work to optimise its business portfolio, while enabling SpyGlass to strengthen manufacturing and support product development.  AVS already supplies the lenses used in SpyGlass's two Phase 3 trials of its investigational Bimatoprost Drug Pad-IOL System, known as the BIM-IOL System. The acquisition is intended to secure long-term supply and scalable manufacturing capacity.  From an operational perspective, owning this capability could better align lens production with development priorities and future demand. It would put the manufacturing team in a more direct relationship with the programme it already supports.  #### Supporting long-acting glaucoma treatment. The BIM-IOL System combines an intraocular lens with attached drug-delivery pads. Implanted during cataract surgery, it is designed to release bimatoprost over three years to reduce elevated eye pressure in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension.  The system remains investigational, with Phase 3 trials underway; regulatory approval has not yet been secured.  The human ambition behind this approach is straightforward: making ongoing treatment less demanding. For patients, the value of innovation ultimately lies in how it fits into everyday life, alongside its safety and effectiveness.  #### Creating opportunities for future lens options. SpyGlass stated the acquisition could also support future toric and extended depth-of-focus lenses compatible with its drug-delivery technology. AVS will continue licensing lens material to Bausch + Lomb for its evVista range.  Santen will retain its IOL business in Japan, with AVS continuing as the exclusive manufacturer and supplier of several lens types.
