Reading a menu, checking a message or reviewing a document can become less comfortable as near vision changes with age. Presbyopia is a familiar part of that exercise, and a new FDA approval adds another prescription treatment option.  Opus Genetics and Viatris announced FDA approval of RYZUMVI (phentolamine ophthalmic solution 0.75%) for presbyopia in adults.  The decision expands the eye drops' existing US indication for reversing pharmacologically induced pupil dilation.  ### How do RYZUMVI eye drops work? The preservative-free formulation reduces pupil size without engaging the ciliary muscle. It offers a pharmacological approach to improving near vision.  Opus Genetics reported that both pivotal Phase III studies, VEGA-2 and VEGA-3, met their primary and all key secondary efficacy endpoints.  Presbyopia typically becomes noticeable in the early to mid-40s and can cause blurred near vision and eye strain.  ### What are the roles of Opus Genetics and Viatris? The companies have a licensing agreement covering the development of phentolamine ophthalmic solution 0.75%, with Viatris holding exclusive US commercialisation rights.  Viatris stated that it was exploring a US partner to commercialise RYZUMVI for presbyopia. Approval and commercial rollout are therefore separate parts of the story.  ### What does the approval mean for patients and clinicians? Another prescription option creates more scope for individual treatment discussions. The relevant questions are how it fits a person's visual needs, clinical circumstances and daily routine.  Safety remains part of the conversation. Common ocular adverse reactions in presbyopia studies included eye redness (21%) and irritation at the application site (16%).  The approval broadens the available approaches to presbyopia management.
