For people living with a rare retinal disease, access to treatment can carry enormous personal significance. Alcon's acquisition of Neurotech Pharmaceuticals brings that patient need into focus alongside a $550M investment in retinal care.  The acquisition adds ENCELTO to Alcon's first and only FDA-approved treatment for adults with idiopathic Macular Telangiectasia Type 2, commonly known as MacTel. Additional payments may be required if certain conditions, including commercial milestones, are met.  ### What is MacTel Type 2? MacTel Type 2 is a progressive retinal disease that affects both eyes and causes the loss of cells involved in vision. For patients and their families, the diagnosis can bring uncertainty about how their sight may change over time.  The condition causes irreversible vision loss, making efforts to slow its progression particularly important. Historically, this patient community had no FDA-approved treatment option.  ### How does ENCELTO work? ENCELTO, also known as revankinagene tarorectcel-lwey, received FDA approval in March 2025 for adults with idiopathic MacTel Type 2.  The treatment uses a small capsule containing genetically engineered cells, which is surgically implanted inside the eye. These cells continuously release ciliary neurotrophic factor, a protein intended to help protect the retina's light-sensing cells, known as photoreceptors.  According to Neurotech, two Phase 3 trials demonstrated that ENCELTO significantly slowed the loss of macular photoreceptors over 24 months. This represents progress towards slowing disease progression, rather than restoring vision already lost.  ### Why is Alcon acquiring Neurotech? The acquisition brings together Neurotech’s cell therapy expertise and Alcon’s established capabilities in surgical retina. Alcon expects its clinical expertise and commercial reach to support wider patient access to ENCELTO. At the time of the announcement, the treatment was available only in the United States; the acquisition itself does not change its regulatory status elsewhere. The opportunity is therefore both scientific and practical: supporting the journey from an approved specialist therapy to its use in everyday retinal care. ### What could this mean for Ophthalmology? From an industry perspective, the deal illustrates how closely biotechnology and ophthalmic surgery can work together. Delivering therapies of this kind requires coordination across scientific development, manufacturing, clinical education and specialist care. For the MacTel community, the most meaningful measure of progress will be how effectively innovation reaches eligible patients.
